FOOTBALL IN HIGH HEELS: THE MASK OF FOOTBALL
Learning about football for me is like one long episode of Unsolved Mysteries minus the UFOs, scary music and Robert Stack/Dennis Farina narrating. (If either one of them were alive today, I’d pay to make that happen—because that would be the most awesome NFL moment of all time!) It should be no surprise that I found another term that made no sense to me, so welcome to today’s lesson.
Join me, perhaps I will finally understand football.
Face Mask—What It Means: This is the protective cage or bars on the front of a player’s helmet. If a player grabs another player’s face mask, there is a penalty ranging from 5 to 15 yards, depending on the severity.
What I Thought It Meant: A bunch of dudes running around in masks playing football. Since I never saw this happen, I then thought maybe it is what happened during a Halloween game. Again, I was very, very wrong. I could have said the dude who was the mascot during the 7 inning stretch and been more accurate–never mind that I had a completely different sport.
Just for laughs, here are a few of my favorite mask-related events from various moments in pop culture.
