FOOTBALL IN HIGH HEELS: I WILL ALWAYS PROTECT YOU
Sometimes football players need a little protection….and no, I am not talking about the ribbed kind you can buy in drugstores. I am talking about on the field. This is why they have a special kind of formation to make sure each player is covered appropriately.
This is what I learned and how I have come to understand it, despite still being a bit confused.
Basic Punt Formation: This is when the players on the punting unit line up against what is known as man coverage.
How it works:
The punter is the player who receives the snapped ball directly from the line of scrimmage. He then kicks it to the opposing team in order to limit any field position advantage. The are also often considered a necessary evil when the offense is incompetent.
The punter is like the Sonny Corinthos of the team…minus the mob and fifteen thousand attempts to marry Carly. (basically in charge of what happens to the ball)
The center or snapper stands over the ball and makes sure it gets to where the punter wants it to go.
The center is similar to a delivery man, except instead of delivering packages, he is in charge of making sure the ball gets to where it belongs.
The punter has his own personal protector, who is five yards behind the line of scrimmage. He makes sure nobody can break through to block the punt.
The personal protector sounds like a superhero that will do anything to protect the city—or in this case, the team.
The wings block outside rushers, as well as making sure no players break free inside them.
The wings make me think of bouncers in a night club, keeping those who do not belong out!
The ends are also known as gunners and are 10-12 yards away from the wings. They tackle the punt returner.
The ends remind me of those who remove the people who the bouncers have to kick out—or the security team on Jerry Springer.
