Trivia: In 1969, club officials chose Royals from more than 17,000 entries in a name-the-team contest. At the time, Sanford Porte, who was one of the 547 fans who submitted Royals as a team name, was awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to the All-Star Game. He chose the name because of “Kansas City’s position as the nation’s leading stocker and feeder market and the nationally known American Royal Livestock and Horse Show. Royalty stands for the best—that’s another reason.”
