FOOTBALL IN HIGH HEELS: HOW TO CHOOSE
As a football fan, Sundays are often the most difficult days. Not only are there several games to watch, but most of them are on AT THE SAME TIME! What is a fan to do? I often watch one and then keep track of others via my ESPN app. However, sometimes you want to watch it live!
I recently had this discussion with my friend Michele, who is also a huge football fan. She actually shared the following letter she wrote to a local paper:
As a New York Giants fan I’m extremely disappointed but not for the reason you’d immediately think. You’d think I was disappointed because my favorite NFL team doesn’t have a chance this Sunday to clinch a playoff spot in a divisional game but I’ve accepted the team’s fate. The reason I’m truly disappointed is because my New York Giants are scheduled to play at 1 p.m. and so are the New York Jets. I’m a die hard New York Giants fan but it doesn’t mean I’m not a huge football fan too. Why is it that the NFL is making me choose which New York football team I can watch live on tv?
I’ve spent my entire life on Long Island and as far back as I can remember I was a New York Giants fan but even as a kid I attended a few New York Jets practices at Hofstra University. I’m not only a fan of one team I’m a fan of the game itself. If I have the chance to root on another team from my state that has a chance at a playoff birth I’d like the opportunity to do such while also being able to root on the team I have grown up watching. The sad part is that it’s not even the first time that the NFL has forced me to make this decision this season. I don’t understand why the NFL would even decide to split such a large market’s audience during such a crucial time in the season. As a die hard Giants fan I’d still like to see the very last game of the season to get another glimpse of Odell Beckham Jr.’s spectacular catches. As a football fan I’d like to see if the New York Jets can finally put together one more win against their own divisional rival the Buffalo Bills to clinch a playoff spot. I thought the NFL had flex scheduling for reasons like this. Sadly I’m forced to make some sort of decision whether to flip channels inevitably missing some of both games I’d like to watch, DVR one and hope no one spoils results for me, or choose an allegiance to one New York team over another. As if the refereeing in football games and the haphazard punishment of players for various violations weren’t enough to be disappointed by this season as a football fan now I must be conflicted by scheduling. While the New York Giants make their decision whether Coughlin will be their head coach next season Goodall should really be thinking hard about his own job in the NFL. If Goodall were a coach in the NFL making such haphazard decisions his job would’ve been in jeopardy long ago.
Disappointed Football Fan
