Headlining the men’s field is Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 Olympic medals, and 11-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte. At the 2015 U.S. National Championships, Phelps won gold medals in the 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, and the 200m individual medley, while Lochte took home gold in the 200m medley, 4×100m medley and 4×100m mixed freestyle at the 2015 World Championships. Four-time Olympic medalist Nathan Adrian and six-time Olympic medalist Matt Grevers will each look to compete in their third Olympic Games.
Highlighting the women’s field are Missy Franklin, who won four gold and five total medals in her Olympic debut in London, and nine-time world champion Katie Ledecky. Ledecky looks to add to her medal count in Rio after stunning the field by winning gold in the 800m free in 2012 at the age of 15. At the 2015 World Championships, she won five gold medals and broke three world records. Natalie Coughlin, a 12-time Olympic medalist, and Dana Vollmer, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, will also compete for spots on the Olympic team.
In all events excluding the men’s and women’s 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle, the top two swimmers in the event make the Rio team. For the 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle, the top six athletes make the Olympic team.
NBC Olympics’ swimming commentary team of longtime NBC golf commentator Dan Hicks (play-by-play) calls the action, joined by three-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines (analyst), and NBC’s Sunday Night Football sideline reporter Michele Tafoya (reporter).
