HOCKEY IN HIGH HEELS: STAR SUNDAY
NBC Sports’ 2017 debut of the NHL Game of the Week features a “Star Sunday” showcase highlighting Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh and Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin, when Detroit hosts New York this Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC from Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich.
Airing most Sundays through the end of the regular season in April, NBC Sports’ “Star Sunday” games will shine a spotlight on a star from each team. The stars selected for each “Star Sunday” will be the focus of pre-game player arrivals and interviews, and will be highlighted in pre-game features and “get-to-know” segments. NBC Sports’ “Star Sunday” game telecasts will include an iso cam on the stars to be utilized for game analysis during intermissions, and scoreboard graphics will let viewers know when these stars are on the ice.
Four-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick (play-by-play), U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk(analyst), and Emmy Award-winner Pierre McGuire (‘Inside-the-Glass analyst) will call this week’s Rangers-Red Wings “Star Sunday” NHL Game of the Week. Pre-game coverage and intermissions will be hosted by Liam McHugh, alongside analysts and former players Mike Milbury and Keith Jones.
NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app — NBC Sports Group’s live streaming platforms for desktops, mobile devices, tablets, and connected TVs — will provide live streaming coverage of Rangers-Red Wings.
RYAN MCDONAGH AND THE NEW YORK RANGERS
Ryan McDonagh is in the midst of his seventh NHL season, and will be participating in All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles next weekend for the second consecutive season. The 27-year-old native of St. Paul, Minn., is currently second on the Rangers in assists (26), and is on pace to set career highs in assists and points. The Rangers’ captain was the 12th overall pick by Montreal in the 2007 NHL Draft, but was traded in 2009 to New York and has played his entire NHL career with the Rangers.
New York (28-16-1, 57 pts) leads the NHL in goals scored (156), but is coming off a 7-6 loss at home to Dallas on Tuesday. This marks the second meeting of the season between the Rangers and Red Wings – Detroit beat New York 2-1 at Madison Square Garden in October.
DYLAN LARKIN AND THE DETROIT RED WINGS
Dylan Larkin was selected 15th overall by Detroit in the 2014 NHL Draft, and led the Red Wings in goals (23) in his rookie campaign last season. Larkin, a hometown favorite for Red Wings fans, was born in Waterford, Mich., and played college hockey at the University of Michigan. Larkin scored a goal and assisted on the game-tying goal late in the third period of Detroit’s 6-5 come-from-behind shootout win last night against Boston.
Detroit (20-19-6, 46 pts) has won three consecutive games, including a 6-3 win against Pittsburgh and a 1-0 shutout victory over Atlantic Division-leading Montreal. The Red Wings are currently four points behind Ottawa for the second Wild Card playoff spot, and have reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 25 consecutive seasons.
