HOCKEY IN HIGH HEELS: MEET YOUR STANLEY PLAYOFF TEAMS—PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
The final stretch for the Stanley Cup is finally here! We have the Pittsburgh Penguins vs. the Nashville Predators in what is bound to be one of the most interesting face offs in years. As I’ve been doing with the NFL teams, here is a bit of history for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who won game one this past Monday.
Year Founded: 1967
Colors: Black, Pittsburgh gold and white
Arena/Stadium: PPG Paints Arena
Mascot: Penguin, also called an Iceburgh
Captain: Sidney Crosby
Stanley Cup wins: 1991, 1992, 2009, 2016
Conference championships: 1991, 1992, 2008, 2009, 2016, 2017
Coach: Mike Sullivan
Owners: Ronald Burkle, Mario Lemieux
Origin of Name: The name originally was supposed to come from a contest, but it was actually co-owner Jack McGregor’s wife Carol who came up with the name. According to Mental Floss, she wanted something with a P, so once she realized the Civic Arena was also known as the Big Igloo, it all came together.
