Jay Cutler agreed to sign a one-year contract on Sunday to play for the Miami Dolphins. The deal, which was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, is worth $10 million.
Cutler spent his last eight seasons with the Chicago Bears before being released from the team on March 9. Following his release, Cutler, 34, announced his retirement from the NFL and became a commentator for Fox Sports.
The move reunites Cutler with his former offensive coordinator in Chicago Adam Gase, who now serves as head coach of the Dolphins. Under Gase’s guidance in 2015, Cutler threw for 3,659 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, according to NFL.com.
The door for the Cutler deal opened when current Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill sustained a knee injury during training camp that could require surgery. Long-time Dolphins backup quarterback Matt Moore was initially the favorite to be the starter this season when Tannehill went down, but Sunday’s move appears to have given Cutler the spotlight in South Beach.
The Dolphins open the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. in Miami.
