MAYWEATHER VS. MCGREGOR: A FIGHT SO BIG THE KILLERS MADE A MUSIC VIDEO FOR IT

By Marc Auker

Few sporting events have gained the widespread attention that the upcoming super fight between boxer Floyd Mayweather and UFC mixed martial artist Conor McGregor has. The fight, which is slated for Aug. 26, has attracted the attention of the American rock group the Killers in the form of a new music video for their single “The Man” from their new LP Wonderful Wonderful.

This is the second music video produced for “The Man” since its release on June 14. The Killers, who are known for such songs as “Somebody Told Me” and “Mr. Brightside,” released the first music video on June 28. The video released yesterday shows the band performing the song in a boxing ring in the Nevada desert, with highlights of both Mayweather and McGregor spliced in. Much like the first video released for “The Man,” the video released yesterday also highlights the city of Las Vegas, which is the hometown of the Killers.

The fight itself takes place at Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena beginning at 9 p.m. EST.

McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) is the UFC’s former featherweight champion, and he is the current UFC lightweight champion. His last bout in the octagon was November 12, 2016 when he defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 for the lightweight championship. Since then, he’s taken a break from MMA to train and fine tune his boxing skills in preparation for Saturday’s matchup.

Mayweather (49-0 boxing) is a former champion of six different divisions. He is no stranger to high-profile matchups within the ring. In May of 2015, Mayweather squared off against boxing legend Manny Pacquiao in a fight that drew 4.4 million pay-per-view buys. After defeating Pacquiao and officially retiring from boxing after defeating Andre Berto in September of 2015, Mayweather came out of retirement for a once-in-a-lifetime match against McGregor.

The fact that the Killers made a video centered around a boxing match shouldn’t come as a surprise. Wonderful Wonderful features the song “Tyson vs. Douglas,” which, according to lead singer Brandon Flowers, is a callback to Buster Douglas knocking out boxing icon Mike Tyson.

Wonderful Wonderful will be released on Sept. 22.
