The Phillies are in the Bronx to start the first of four rescheduled games between them and the Yankees. Gerrit Cole is making his Yankee Stadium debut for the Bombers while Phillies pitcher Jake Arietta makes his 2020 debut.
Yankees strike first in the bottom of the first with a home run by DJ Le Mahieu to right field. Jay Bruce would tie the game up in the top of the third with a home run of his own. Brett Gardner would see his homer and raise him another with a home run of his own, just over the left field wall. Aaron Judge would double, and be brought home a play later. Yankees lead 3-1.
Neither pitcher would allow too many base runners until the bottom of the sixth inning. Aaron Hicks waled, and Giancarlo Stanton was hit by a pitch. Mike Ford would fly out, setting the stage for Gio Ursela to add another home run of his own, doubling the Yankees score.
Rain delay before the seventh brings action to a stand still.
Speaking of rain. Tomorrow’s match up has already been moved to Wednesday in Philadelphia due to Tropical Storm Isaias. Yankees will be the home team for the first game, the Phillies will be the home team for the second game in a double header.
Play resumed just over an hour later with Brooks Kriske taking the mound after the lengthy delay. He would walk the first two batters, an allow a run to score after a single from Adam Haseley. Chad Green would replace Kriske, striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
Phillies would cut the gap in half with another run in the eighth, but the final score would be 6-3 Yankees.
