Stage 8: CAZÈRES-SUR-GARONNE>LOUDENVIELLE
A 13 rider breakaway got off the front soon after the start of the stage. At one point their lead was over 14 minutes as the race headed into the Pyrenees. Everyone was strung out on the first descent after Benoit Cosnefroy went over first, adding 10 points to his King of the Mountains lead.
Everything broke apart on the next climb, the first beyond classification in this year’s tour, the Port de Balès. A 11.7km climb with an average gradient of 7.7% and a maximum gradient of 15.8%. Cosnefroy could not stay at the front and Nans Peters takes maximum points on this climb. He would stay in the lead, be the first over the final climb of the day and take the stage win. He would also climb to second place in the KOM classification after starting the day with 0 points. He finished the stage 47 seconds of second place.
Adam Yates keeps the yellow jersey another day.
