The final three games of the regular season for the Yankees.
J..A. Happ made the first two outs fairly quickly but then lost command of the ball, issuing two walks. A three run homer by Garrett Cooper quickly put the Marlins in the lead, 3-0.
Bottom of the inning, Aaron Judge strikes out looking on a called strike well below his knees. Manager Aaron Boone voices his displeasure and gets tossed from the game.
It looked like Happ would give up more runs in the second inning with two base hits. A sac bunt, and a strikeout delayed the runs, but Starling Marte ended up hit by a pitch to load the bases. A mound visit in order, Happ gets Jesus Aguilar to fly out to right field and end the threat of more runs.
Third inning, the Yankees claw their way back with a few base hits, including a two run double by Aaron Hicks. 3-2 Marlins.
Both pitchers manage to settle down and keep the offense from getting hot. Bottom of the eighth inning, Gary Sanchez gets a base hit. Mike Tauchman comes on as a pinch-runner. He seems to steal second, but the umpires return him to first on the fact that the catcher’s arm hit the umpire’s mask during the throw. Clint Frazier strikes out swinging and breaks his bat over his knee. A pitching change and a strikeout followed by a throwing error in a pickoff attempt brings Judge to bat. He flies one to right field and Tauchman scores, tying the score. 3-3.
We move to extra innings with runners starting on second. A sac bunt moves that runner to third for the Marlins. A fielder’s choice and a throwing error leaves runners on second and third. A sac fly brings a runner home. 4-3 Marlins.
Bottom of the inning, Yankees looking to tie or go ahead, starts off with a walk to Gleyber Torres. Kyle Higashioka bunt pops out to the first baseman. The two runners steal bases with one out. Clint Frazier walks to load them up. DJ LeMahieu at the plate, grounds into a double play.
